How's Your Spontaneity?

NEVER before have I ever been SO spontaneous!

I know, I know... I keep going off and not talking to you for periods of time.

But, tell me...
If you had an opportunity to pack a suitcase and be on an airplane one hour later heading to a beautiful island for two weeks, wouldn't you do it too? Well, OF COURSE you would!

That's precisely what happened to me over the Easter weekend. An email came with a last minute invitation, I thought about it for about an hour, took the following hour to race around the house and throw necessities into a suitcase and away I went to board my float plane. Synchronicity had it that I got the remaining seat on the plane and the last available room at the retreat center... was I meant to go, or what!

Never before have I ever been so spontaneous... and I loved it!

I've always thought of myself as very adaptable, able to change with the seasons and places, able to travel in style and also rough it in the jungle, too. NOW I can also say that I am able to make prompt and decisive choices for myself and be free-spirited like the wind. How I like these characteristics!

So where was I, you might be asking? Here...

For the THIRD time since September, I got to go to the Haven Institute to attend a powerful personal growth seminar, Phase Two. This time was especially exciting as I got to meet up with approximately eight friends that had been in my earlier programs. And, believe me, when we spend two weeks together as intensely as we do at Haven, friendships become very deep, very fast!

I even got to have my very first experience of kayaking, which was wonderful!
I am ever grateful to Richard for supporting me to go and do this life-changing work on myself at this time in my life. Having spent many months at Esalen (a famous growth center on the California coastline) years ago, and knowing the transformation possible, Richard has urged me to gift myself with this experience for a long time... and I'm doing so now. I've come home feeling so rich in so many ways.

So, I'm back... gradually catching up on life and reaching out again.
I hope you've been really well and that you might consider crazy spontaneity in your life, too. Talk about affirming!

Yes, I'll talk to you again soon, Carolyn...
no more travel until mid-May now, when we will go off to Atlanta, Georgia.
Go to www.life-balance-success.com for your copy of our BEST YOU Possible eBook with it's numerous great bonuses AND Relaxation MP3.

Being Present

Wow, did the west coast of B.C. ever receive a fast and furious blast of winter last week! Within a few hours, SIX inches of snow fell and turned our mountainous neighbourhood into a winter wonderland. THEN, just as fast and furiously, heavy rain and winds and temperatures of 12 degrees Celsius moved in and, within eight hours, the snow was absolutely gone! Now, that's the way to have a winter snowfall!

Changing pace...

"Slow down and everything you are chasing will come around and catch you."
Quotation by John De Paola

Does that mean that if I slow down all of the Christmas list of chores will suddenly, magically become accomplished? Wouldn't that be great.

Since my return from The Haven, where I participated in a 12-day seminar and then went to California for the following week, I admit I feel as though I am in time warp. How is it that it is already December 8th with Christmas now a mere 17 days away?!?!

Normally a tremendously organized person, most of my Christmas tasks would be well under way by late summer... after all, most of our gifting goes out by mail. I HAVE to be organized far in advance.

Let's just say, I've changed!

Nope... not worrying and fretting anymore about what I have or have not accomplished. "Doing the best I can" seems to be my new motto. I'm changing the previous way of being and I admit, I'm not sure I like this more casual approach. I keep thinking I'll be letting something or someone down... for example, like when there are no gifts for the nieces and nephews to open this year.

We'll see. Perhaps I am breaking a long spell of being a "hard boss" on myself and am, instead, becoming more balanced and self-compassionate. Heaven forbid I am merely becoming a slouch.

I do admit that I feel I'm missing out on the "pre-joy" of the holiday season. I'm even weirded out as I enter the stores all decked out in seasonal decoration and carols are being played over the speakers.

Whoa... quick... time warp me into December 8th, please! I'd like to be present. Maybe the answer is to put up a Christmas tree this weekend... that will likely help my spirit enter the season.
For now, still back in mid-November, Carolyn

P.S. Don't forget that you have access to a great, smart gift to purchase for your loved ones and co-workers... the "BEST YOU" eBook! http://www.life-balance-success.com/ (There's my Christmas gifting solution, too... everyone is going to receive the eBook!)

Are You Blobbing Yet?

I'd like to pay tribute to all of my Australian readers and subscribers today!!

Hat's off to all of you Aussies seeking Work and Life Balance. Having vacationed in Australia many years ago, I admit I saw no signs of anyone living in stress and needing balance tips and tools. Perhaps it was because I was in sight-seeing mode, my eyes seeing merely the beauty of the city and countryside... I simply had no inside peek into "real life" Australia.

I can hardly wait to visit Australia again in the future. It is a VAST country with such diverse cultures, landscapes, climates, vegetations and peoples. We, as Canadians were made to feel very welcome throughout our travels. Sydney is an awesome city... Melbourne another beautiful and interesting city... the Gold Coast hot and gorgeously filled with bronze beauties everywhere. Holding a koala bear melted my heart. My photographer self was very busy there, capturing the great sights... here's one of my moment caught on film. (This sunset moment sent me into immediate inner balance!)

Thanks to my Australian friend, Martin for sharing an Aussie expression with me in an email recently. He was telling me about how busy he'd been with a project over the last eight weeks and then said, "I treated myself to two blob days where I recharged my batteries."

When I inquired what a "blob" day is, he emailed me again, saying, "In Australia we say a slow day where you relax and take a load off is a day where you blob! Hence a blob day!"

Thanks so much, Martin... this is worth sharing around!

So, my Work and Life Balance reader friends, I hope you'll catch the Australian spirit and treat yourself to frequent all-important "Blob Days" too! Blobbing is really vital to our entire wellbeing. Smile... if you find that expression as contagious as I do, spread it around!

Blobbing (relaxation) is a really good thing for life balance.

Warmly, Carolyn

Music In the Workplace

Thanks to the Times of India online newspaper for their Work and Life Balance article entitled,

"Work, office, music!"

Written and published 30 May, 2007... P.S. India is already into our tomorrow. : )

Have a read... I couldn't agree more!

"Many corporate organisations play non-stop music for their employees. Who doesn't want to lead a stress-free life? Indeed, people aren't hesitant while taking various steps to make their lives smoother. Be it playing with pets, a trip to the spa, vacationing, watching movies or listening to favourite tracks, all these serve as stress busters for many.

Music, the all-time favourite mantra for relieving stress, has been with us for ages. And now, with fusion and trance gaining popularity, it is a constant presence in many corporate set ups as well. Nikhil Mehta, an IT professional, says, "Music matters a lot, and adds positive vibes to the atmosphere. It helps relax amidst workplace tensions. It helps employees to work with efficiency and ease." Trance and golden oldies of Bollywood are the preferred varieties of music."

(Interestingly, I personally love to listen to Indian music as I work! By the way, have you discovered iTunes Radio yet? If not, check it out on the Internet... there are hundreds of online radio stations from all over the world to suit your preferred type of music!)

"As a matter of fact, some prominent radio stations too have come up with stress-busting music albums. Even when confronted by strict deadlines, music enables one to perform better. Rathi Pradhan, an advertising professional, echoes Mehta's thought when he says, "The pressure in our profession is too much. Music plays a key role, and soothes the mind."

Many studies have proved that music helps in reducing chronic pain. People suffering from back pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, and pain from injuries can benefit by listening to it.

Yet, not everyone is convinced that music is a blessing; indeed, some feel that it acts as an impediment to good performance at work. Mahafreed Irani, a journalist, affirms, "Music doesn't help and, at times, the songs are very annoying. Not everyone enjoys trance, and rock for that matter. Just because a few enjoy, everyone else is also forced to listen to them. It also hampers our work schedule since one song is played again and again."

Irani's view is not shared by the majority, who like to enjoy their day's work in the most relaxed manner possible. For them, music is the shortest route to bliss which they love to experience even while working."

While some prefer as much silence as possible to do their most productive work in, others are inspired by specific types of soothing music. What about you?

Tell me whether you are inspired or distracted by music in your working place... and if enjoyed, what type of music do you work best to... I'd love to hear from you.

Have a great few days until I talk to you again.

Warmly, Carolyn
P.S. Our "Becoming the BEST YOU Possible" eBook Package will be available for purchase in a matter of days now!!! Stay tuned.

Even the Weary Christmas Traveler Can Relax & Sleep Like A Baby

Thanks for visiting.

Sleep… the all-important elixir of life! Though the average adult typically needs eight hours of sleep each night studies show that our hectic North American lifestyle is actually contributing to a deficit in most people’s sleep time. In any given year at least one-third of the adult US population reports a sleep disturbance.

Sleep is a vital function, not a luxury!

Many people are shortening the amount of time they allot for their sleep in order to accommodate all the other things that need to be fit into their busy lives, even at the risk of their health. I, personally, don’t do well to short change myself of adequate sleep and I do all that I can to protect my regular sleep schedule for that all-important and loved replenishment.

Humans need two types of sleep: Non-Rapid Eye Movement sleep (non-REM sleep) and Rapid Eye Movement sleep (REM sleep). Our bodies and brain slow down during NREM sleep, the time of our deepest physical rejuvenation. REM sleep, on the other hand, is the time with fast eye movements and very active brainwave patterns and is accompanied by dreaming. This is the time when we are most rejuvenated mentally and physiologically. Most of our deep NREM sleep occurs in the first third of our sleep period, while REM periods are longer and occur on a more regular basis in the second half of our sleep period, though this pattern changes over the course of the night. Without this quality sleep, a sleep debt grows and we begin to suffer the consequences.

Sleep for travellers can be challenging, many averaging only six hours of sleep a night (rather than the necessary eight) and therefore accumulate a nightly sleep debt of two hours, which only adds up with each night of sleep loss. Thankfully, two consecutive nights of sleeping eight hours each can recover this deprivation.

On top of less sleep, changing time zones, disrupting the internal body clock, interruption to our familiar food and exercise patterns, as well as irregular exposure to light can all result in disrupted or reduced sleep and even sleep debt.

I recall eastward bound travel I’ve made and admit I definitely found it harder than flying west! Why? Though we live on a 24-hour day, the internal body clock prefers to run longer. When flying west, our day is 'extended' and going in the natural direction of our internal clock, whereas, when flying east, we lose time and ‘shrink’ our day in opposition to our internal clock's natural tendency.

When travelling to a different time zone, our internal (circadian) clock needs time to adjust. Our body's internal systems all adjust at different rates, the sleep and wake cycle at one rate, while our temperature rhythm changes at a different pace. This is what creates jet lag. Due to time zone changes, we may be wide awake on “home time”, while the place we visit is sound asleep, and visa versa. I will never forget looking over at Richard and finding him sound asleep beside me as we toured around Paris… why?... it was night time back at home!

18 tips to promote relaxation and sleeping like a baby…even away from home!

□ Take along familiar home items that might encourage you to feel “home away from home,” such as a family photo, candles, relaxing aroma therapy bath products, etc.

□ Supplement your reduced sleep with a short nap(s) because any sleep is better than no sleep.

□ Ask for a room away from noisy area, such as elevators, ventilation systems, stairwells and lounges.

□ If travelling for only a few days, it may be most beneficial to keep your internal body clock on your own 'home time'. This includes sleeping times as well as meal times, too, because even our stomachs have to adjust during travel.

□ Be smart around the use of stimulants, such as coffee, to keep you awake. Time your consumption of them to when you need a lift, but not too close to when you need to unwind. Though many people lean towards having a few drinks to “wind down,” alcohol consumed within 3-4 hours of bedtime can actually disrupt sleep quality and quantity. Have that alcoholic drink earlier than later and, towards bedtime drink a camomile tea or steamed milk for the relaxing, sleepy effect these bring on.

□ Avoid eating a big meal before you want to sleep or your body will get busy to digest, rather than slow down to replenish! If you really must eat something, eat sparingly and smartly, foods that will not produce stimulating effects.

□ Be smart with your evening activities, plan gentle things that will induce sleep (so avoid upsetting evening news, etc.).

□ Though exercise close to bedtime is thought to tire us out, in fact, it can serve to stimulate us awake instead. A gentle, quiet, restful session of relaxation stretches or yoga poses, however, will likely do the job of mellowing the body and mind for sleep.

□ If sleep is eluding you and you’re tempted to take a pharmaceutical in order to sleep, make sure you know the side effects of any medication and have talked to your family doctor first. If you insist on taking something, a natural remedy to promote drowsiness is Valerian, or the more benign anti-nausea travel pill called Gravol, now more widely dispensed in hospitals instead of sleeping pills.

□ Bring along an aroma therapy pillow spray infused with lavender or mint… the scents will play their wonderful effect on your mood and lull you into relaxation.

□ Draw yourself a bath infused with essence of lavender and languish in it as a good sleep-induction.

□ Set your environment to maximize getting to sleep… close the draperies, turn the temperature down to cool rather than warm, place the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the hotel doorknob, and have the hotel hold all phone calls.

□ This might sound funny, but try wearing cozy, soft, loose-fitting cotton socks to bed for a snugly effect…I sleep better this way!

□ Since the lighting conditions might be different in your travel location than at home, consider using an eye mask.

□ Travel with a portable CD player and a Relaxation meditation or calming music to listen to in order to wind down and tuck in! Shop around for the perfect travel “sleep enticing” music or meditation, such as our Inner Fitness® “Relaxation” CD, for a great night’s sleep!

□ Earplugs are a blessing to mask unfamiliar hotel sounds and snoring!

□ If a busy mind keeps you awake, speeding along at 100mph making it so that your body can’t go to sleep, interrupt it as though you are boss and say, “No, this is not the time to sort things out, this is my time to sleep to rest and replenish! I’ll work with you tomorrow to sort these things out after I am rested and able to think clearly.” Stand your ground, it might take a little practice!

□ If you find yourself tossing and turning for more than 20 or 30 minutes, you’re better to get up and do something that promotes rest. Listen to your relaxation CD, watch TV or read until you feel drowsy, get back into bed and try again.

There you have it… a long list of relaxing sleep-care ideas to experiment with to sleep like a baby while you’re traveling at Christmas!

Self-Hypnosis / Meditation for Stress Relief

Thanks for visiting.

Global change is under way and most people are feeling it's effects with more and more pressure. There are issues facing our countries, our peoples and our home planet that have never had to be faced ever before. And though it is an exciting time to be alive on Earth today, it is also a scary and insecure time, too.

How to stay focussed and calm and balanced in times like these?... a challenge facing most. It is predicted by the World Health Organization that stress, anxiety and depression will become the leading cause of disability in the workplace over the next 20 years. More and more individuals and corporations are now seeking answers to reduce stress, from taking yoga (at an all-time popularity level), to martial arts, fitness disciplines and meditation, too.

Self-hypnosis and meditation have powerfully positive effects on the body, including causing a slowing of the heart beat, the lowering of blood pressure, relaxation of the muscles, a gradual decline in the breathing and improved immune system.

The effects to a person's emotional and mental being are equally as dramatic, causing the quietening of mental thoughts, release of negative and depressive feelings... and infusing an inner peace in a person's soul. Self-hypnosis and meditation are the perfect remedy to eliminate stress and infuse relaxation.

Help your body to heal, your mind to become still, your feelings to seek joy and your spirit to know the purpose of your existence. We can help you with our series of Inner Fitness(R) meditation CDs to support your practice... www.innerfitness.ca/products.htm Meditate. Practice self-hypnosis. You will quickly begin to experience the rewards, throughout your entire being.

This will be my last post until November 15th as Richard and I are off to teach a Work and Life Balance seminar in Austin, Texas! Have a great ten days or so and I look forward to talking with you upon our return.

Awesome Yoga Teachers

Hello... thanks for visiting.

Yoga came very naturally to me after a long dance education. I was looking for variation of physical discipline that was less rigorous than ballet but would still give me a wonderful toned, strong body... and quiet mind. I decided to start studying yoga at home with the use of yoga videos/DVD's and thankfully found a series that are not only exceptionally high quality, they're visually appealing and inspiring to work with. I am referring to the Gaiam Video series, featuring the quality teachings of Rodney Yee and Patricia Walden.

Thanks to Gaiam for producing and making the following video clip available for viewing. Take a look at this short 5-minute video... it will give you a little introduction to the value of using specific yoga poses (modelled after the Iyengar method) for strength and toning, as shown by Rodney Yee. This video shows only quick examples of poses featured on the DVD entitled, Yoga Burn" ... worth seeking out if power yoga intrigues you.

Click on this link;

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1768207804553361452&q=gaiam++yoga

This video shows a pretty advanced level of yoga ... one I love when I want to take my yoga much deeper. Rodney Yee and Patricia Walden are two of my favourite yoga teachers and I highly recommend that you look for their work in your local book stores and yoga supply shops. They are true masters in yoga!

If you are new to yoga, I recommend that you look for Gaiam's "Yoga Practice For Beginners" featuring Patricia Walden which offers a gentle, comprehensive guide for building flexibility and strength of body plus postures for calming the body and mind. It is, of course, really important to start gradually, listen to your body and only go as far as your body will allow you to until you can gently take it to a new level.

The 3-DVD set that has served me well over the years features both Patricia and Rodney's work, which includes a DVD to practice relaxation, another for practicing flexibility and the last for practicing strength, each between 70 and 80 minutes long.

If you've not had an introduction to yoga before, perhaps this is a great way to get started. Classes can sometimes be intimidating for newcomers to yoga... no need worrying, choose instead to work in the privacy of your home. Classes at a later date though can take your yoga training to a whole deeper level, for each teacher offers new variations!

Here's to a sculptured body and quiet mind.
